The New York Rangers will make a push for a playoff spot with added experience in net after claiming goalie Alex Auld off re-entry waivers from the Dallas Stars on Saturday.
Auld, who was waived on Feb. 24 and cleared 24 hours later, will call New York home, not the American Hockey League's Texas Stars, after the Olympic break.
The 29-year-old has a 9-6-3 record in 21 games this season with a 3.00 goals-against average and .894 save percentage.
Auld was particularly strong on home ice with a 6-1-0 mark and 2.51 GAA in his past seven starts at American Airlines Center.
His best season was 2005-06 in Vancouver when Auld set career highs in wins (33) and appearances (67) to capture team MVP honours with the Canucks.
The Cold Lake, Alta., native has spent eight-plus seasons in the NHL with Ottawa, Boston, Phoenix, Florida and Vancouver.
In 204 regular-season games, he is 83-81-28 with a 2.78 GAA, six shutouts and .904 save percentage.
Auld has been particularly stingy against Atlantic Division opponents in his career, going 13-9-5.
That's welcome news for the Rangers, who are 5-9-2 against New Jersey, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and the New York Islanders this season.
